Venue
The Bloomington campus of Indiana University and the Psychological and Brain Sciences Department are proud to host EPIC XV. Located in what many in the United States call “the crossroads of America”, Indiana is uniquely situated at a convenient intersection between the East and West Coasts of the United, States, between Canada and Mexico and between Europe and Asia.
A Cultural Center in the Midwest
The University and the community of Bloomington have created a sophisticated cultural capital featuring international-caliber performance in opera, theater, music and dance. The renowned Jacobs School of Music, the IU Theatre and Ballet Department, and the IU Auditorium offer a rich variety of entertainment. There are over 1000 classical and jazz performances on campus each year, the majority free of charge (hyperlink to: http://www.music.indiana.edu/events/). The community of Bloomington is dotted with cafes, ethnic and local restaurants, popular music venues, and galleries within walking distance of the conference. Information about on and off campus activities that will be taking place during the conference will be available in your conference registration packet, and can also be found online. Museums on campus include:
A Scenic Campus and Countryside
The Bloomington campus is a magnificent blend of traditional and modern architecture set in a landscaped environment. Walkways meander alongside streams, through woods and along tree lined paths. Spring is an especially beautiful time of year when the campus is ‘a-bloom’ with flowering trees, fragrant shrubs, and vibrantly colored spring bulbs. We invite you to preview some of the scenes that await you by taking a virtual campus tour. Outdoor recreation also abounds. The rolling hills surrounding Bloomington include several large parks with hiking, fishing, and boating.
Affordable
Visitors to Indiana University are often pleasantly surprised by the relatively moderate cost for hotels in facilities that are comparable in other ways to large city accommodations. Other expenses such as taxis fares, gratuities, parking, food and beverage expenses are modest in comparison to conferences of similar size and duration to EPIC XV, but held in large metropolitan areas.
Indiana University is the location of the oldest continuing psychology laboratory in America. William Lowe Bryan, a future president of the American Psychological Association (1903), opened the laboratory in January 1888. Distinguished IU faculty have included B.F. Skinner, W.K. Estes, Richard Schiffrin, and J.R. Kantor. William Bryan’s studies were the impetus for the strong experimental emphasis that has characterized psychology at Indiana up to the present day. The state of the art laboratories include several ERP labs and a Brain Imaging Center with a 3 T research MRI scanner.
The Department is also affiliated with the Program in Neuroscience , the Cognitive Science Program , and the The Kinsey Institute, a pioneering center of interdisciplinary research in the fields of human sexuality, gender, and reproduction.
Bloomington is located in the Eastern Time Zone. At the time of the EPIC XV, Bloomington will be operating on Eastern Daylight Time, the same time as New York City and the East Coast of the United States, and one hour ahead of Chicago.
Late April weather can be variable with daytime temperature in the mid 70s- Fahrenheit (21 degrees Celsius) and nights in the low 50s – Fahrenheit (10 degrees Celsius). Although one of the loveliest time to visit the campus, temperatures in the spring can vary. We suggest that you bring layered clothing to accommodate either below or above average temperature. Local weather information is available through the National Weather Service.
